Denbigh, Howell's School c.1875

More about this scene
The young girls we see climbing over the stile (right) suggest a more carefree time than we live in, and the scene is almost bucolic. The school was founded in 1859 by the trustees of Thomas Howell, a cloth merchant, who left a legacy of 12,000 gold ducats for the 'education of orphaned Welsh maidens'. This is obviously not a requirement to enter the school today, but the annual income from this legacy is still used to support some 'orphan scholars'.
