More about this scene

The town was fortunate to have a number of County Schools. The national school was attended by 200 boys and girls. The neat and commodious building was erected in 10 acres of land at a cost of £1,000, and received several endowments. When the railway reached East Dereham in 1882, the town's population increased, and another County School was opened. This was not successful, and was bought by the Watts Naval Training Organisation; the little lads in their sailors uniform were familiar sight in the town at weekends.

A Selection of Memories from Dereham

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Dereham

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I live a short walk from this lovely building. This year is the 50th anniversary of Bishop Bonner's Cottage being turned into a museum 1963 - 2013. There will be a free admission day to the museum on its birthday of 11th May 2-4.30pm, you can find out more about the cottage on www.derehamhistory.com.
This is the first photograph I've seen of an early glimpse of the school, I wish I could find more and information on it.
