More about this scene
This photograph hardly does justice to the most magnificent of all British hillforts. Sir Mortimer Wheeler excavated it between 1934-38. Despite three different phases of improving the fort and its defences, it still proved no match for the 2nd Legion commanded by Vespasian who took the fort in AD44. Excavations revealed 54,000 sling-stones, which in the end were inadequate weapons against Roman discipline and experience
