Ashton School

A Memory of Dunstable.

I attended Aston school in church street. Mr cunningham was the headmaster. The school had a path up to it with cottages to the right.(now demolished ) Many happy years there, especially with mrs pratt.
I failed my 11 plus and went to Brewers hill and now i have an honours degree in history from huddersfield university.. so much for the 11 plus.

Alas, it is no more. The greedy council has sold the school and it is being turned into flats.
I also attended Ashton School from 1946 to 1952,Teachers included Mrs Calcot in infants and Mr Riding and Mrs East in Juniors. Mr Riding had a Cheshire accent and gave prizes from his own pocket to the First and Second in his class at the end of the summer term. I still have mine, a book, for coming second. There were 48 of us in the class.Mrs East came from Yorkshire and I remember a lesson about Sheffield cutlery with a knife a fork and a spoon in various stages of manufacture. Also failed 11 plus and we moved to Flamstead so went to Secondary School in Markyate.
