Durham, The Cathedral From Observatory Hill 1918

More about this scene
The battlemented single-storey structure immediately in front of the west portal is the Galilee Chapel, which dates from 1175. Bishop Hugh le Puiset had attempted to build a Lady Chapel at the east end of the cathedral, but construction was plagued with problems, including walls cracking. These events were interpreted as a sign that Durham's saintly misogynist St Cuthbert was angry at the thought of women being allowed so close to his shrine.
