Share your own memories of Edgware and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

My sister Maureen was born during the war and spent a lot of time in an Air raid shelter in our front room !! My brother Mick and I Barbara were born post war but I can still remember food rationing and Barrage balloons in Edgwareberry Park. We all went to Broadfields Infant and Junior School and ...see more
Though I was actually born in Bushey, Herts., ( I believe that was where the maternity hospital was in 1939.) Melrose Gardens was a cul-de-sac of about thirty five houses and at least half the houses had kids, so being an only child, they were like my 'family'. We went to Saturday Morning Pictures at the Gaumont...every Saturday, and then bought a penn'orth of chips at the Fish and ...see more

I was baptised in this church in 1953. Born in April 1949 at 91, The Chase, Burnt Oak, my christening was postponed due to the death of my grandfather, Alexander Sturges in November of that year. He is buried in the churchyard. This was known as Handel's church in our family. Apparently the Earl of Chandos was his patron and it stands near Chandos Park.
I lived in Fairfield Crescent and went to school at St James RC School in Burnt Oak. They were happy days and I made some great friends while working at Green Shields; I was Valerie Wright at that time. Would really love to hear from anyone who might remember me from that time, you can find me on facbook. I migrated to Melbourne Australia in 1971 and only returned to Edgware in 2008, Oooo quite changed, ...see more
I was actually born in Bushey but I grew up in Edgware. I always thought it a funny little town but in it's own way it was beautiful. The parks were beautiful and always had Rose Gardens and ponds to visit. Walking was a way of life and cars were far and few between. High Street had wonderful shops to stop and look at and the hustle and bustle of London had not reached it. The Green Shield House was the ...see more

I was married at this church in July 1955; it is so so beautiful inside. I remember when I was still in school they found old paintings underneath the wall coverings and they are magnificent..
I grew up nearer to Queensbury but no pages for that little spot. I can recall playing on the streets almost all day, the streets were safer then. We played five stones and whips and tops, we whipped the heck out of those little spinning pieces of wood. Boys and girls all played together in such innocence. We could stay out until the lamplighter came along to light up the street lights. Then go home to a ...see more
