Grove Cottage
A Memory of Ellington.
In 1952 my newly widowed mother bought Grove Cottage - which was in Grove Lane (since called Malting Lane) and lived there for a while before renting it out to an American Airforceman named Robert Whaley, and his family, who were stationed nearby. Not long afterwards it had to be sold as my mother had to deal with a family bereavement in her home town of Portsmouth. With 2 young children and unable to drive, her commuting was unsustainable, reluctantly and with great sadness it was sold.
Some years later after visiting my husband's relation in Stamford, Grove Cottage was mentioned, so after abortive previous attempts to locate it, renewed enquiries revealed Grove Lane had been renamed Malting Lane. The current owner at that time was discovered and a meeting arranged. This new relationship proved interesting discoveries into its past history.
