Green Gate Stables
A Memory of Eltham.
I was born in Mottingham in 1951 .but from the age of 9 years I caught the 161 bus to Eltham on a weekend ,duffel bag on my back and went to Green Gate Stables which was at the back of shops at the top end of the high st...run by Bill Muttit..he had a lovely variety of old horses and ponies from Shetlands (Jock & Little Jim)to a feathered piebald cart horse called.Stella....There were a few of us keen youngsters willing to help muck out, groom, and take the ponies to Dansom park to give pony rides..this was great fun as we got to ride our favourite pony there & back ...Sadly this area was ripe for development and the stables disappeared (sort of relocated to Lee)There had already been a large car park built next to the stables so it was inevitable it had to go at some point.. I remember that Woolworhs was on the opposite side of the high St as I walked from the stables , so that's the vicinity..I would LOVE to know anyone that possibly remembers these stables.. I went on in time to work in Eltham library in 1967 & was there for 4 years ,again would be thrilled if anyone was there too at that time ...Hazel nee Skinner
