More about this scene
The large very attractive Saxon village on the road from Oakham to Stamford now overlooks the modern dam on the north-east angle of Rutland Water formed in the valley of the River Gwash, landscaped by Dame Sylvia Crowe in the 1970s. Always of some local importance, the village had a weekly medieval market and three-day fair at the feast of St Botolph, granted in 1318. Although the photograph captures a cosy enclave of stone and thatched cottages, the village has expanded, and now contains a whole range of architectural styles.
