A Visit To Epsom (1949)
A Memory of Epsom.
In 1949 when I was four years old I travelled by train from Scotland with my mum to visit my Aunt Nan, her husband Tom, and their daughter Dorothy, who was also four at the time. Uncle Tom was butler to Lady Sybil Grant and he and his family lived in a single-storey cottage on the The Durdens. I remember that the cottage was situated at the top of a lane with a wall on its left. Cousin Dorothy had a doll and I decided I wanted one too. I remember the lady in the toyshop in Epsom offering me a doll with painted hair. However, I preferred another doll with “real” hair, which my mother bought me. My mum must have been quite liberated for the time because I was actually a boy!
