I Grew Up In Six Acre Cottages

A Memory of Fawkham Green.

Hi Belinda Barton

Having read about you on page 25 of the book " I remember when" from 2009, I see you lived at six acre cottages.

I lived there in 1956 and again in 1958/59, my aunt Dolly and her husband Alec lived next to Mr and Mrs Bailey, they had a son called George, who was in the Navy, after this he became a Postman at Longfield, I too was a postman and worked with George from 1966 to 1989.

Yes we used to walk to Longfield up over the fields to the footbridge over the railway lines to Station, then down to the village shops.

My aunt also worked for Mr and Mrs Lemette, as six acre cottages were called Tied Cottages, and a condition of living there was the ladies had to work at the owners home.

The small school next door to the cottages used to be freezing in the winter but oh so nice in the summer, lots of rabbits and yes a wood down at the end.

Do you also remember Mr Bancks (not spelt incorrectly) who came up each day with his milk churns on the back of his horse and cart and used to ladle the milk out into a jug, plus only one bus each week, a small Guy Vixen with 26 seats

Me making myself feel old now but I am only 68, my name is Kelvin Curtis, not related to the Curtis family that lived in Fairview Cottages Fawkahm .Belinda try to contact me if you wish to

I am so sorry kelvin have just seen this on here. Perhaps I should check in more frequently. I didn't know that the women had to work if they lived in the Tied cottages. Actually wasn't aware of the previous name either. My dad lived in one of the cottages next to my nans house also. But my stepmother did not have to work there. She worked in Longfields I think. My dad darryl used to work in London when he lived there, at Buckingham Palace in fact. You may have known him. His name was Darryl Edwards. Grandad's name was Bill and nans name was Betty. Hope you are well. Do you still live around the area? I am hoping to go back soon to lay some flowers in the cemetery for nan.

Take care

Belinda Clare
Hi Belinda, nice to have got back to me, I am sure your dad might remember me, I remember the Baileys and feel I know or did know the Edward family, my e.mail is krc6646@hotmail.co.uk hopefully Francis Frith will let this go through to you, I am 70 in a few months it all seems so unreal now, until a few months ago, I drove a double decker bus up to the school that was next to six acre cottages, even they have gone now, kind regards from Kelvin
