I Grew Up In Six Acre Cottages

A Memory of Fawkham Green.

Having read about you on page 25 of the book " I remember when" from 2009, I see you lived at six acre cottages.

I lived there in 1956 and again in 1958/59, my aunt Dolly and her husband Alec lived next to Mr and Mrs Bailey, they had a son called George, who was in the Navy, after this he became a Postman at Longfield, I too was a postman and worked with George from 1966 to 1989.

Yes we used to walk to Longfield up over the fields to the footbridge over the railway lines to Station, then down to the village shops.

My aunt also worked for Mr and Mrs Lemette, as six acre cottages were called Tied Cottages, and a condition of living there was the ladies had to work at the owners home.

The small school next door to the cottages used to be freezing in the winter but oh so nice in the summer, lots of rabbits and yes a wood down at the end.

Do you also remember Mr Bancks (not spelt incorrectly) who came up each day with his milk churns on the back of his horse and cart and used to ladle the milk out into a jug, plus only one bus each week, a small Guy Vixen with 26 seats
