More about this scene

Here on the High Street was the busiest part of town, once the coaching and postal services began in 1660. Half way between London and Edinburgh on the busy Great North Road, Ferrybridge was a hub, with smaller roads branching off into West Yorkshire. Fifty coaches would pass here each day, and horses were stabled in the numerous inns, many of which still survive. Post-chaises ferried travellers between the coaches and their overnight stay – this was truly a bustling place. The 1950s blocks of flats, left, replaced many small businesses, and even the Three Horseshoes Inn (centre distance) has been demolished to create a car park. In spite of once being a major postal sorting centre, the town's post office, right, closed on 27 March 2004.
