Ferrybridge is ideally placed for a major power station - coal could be delivered on the adjacent River Aire, and so from 1927 for thirty years Ferrybridge 'A' Power Station, seen here, generated power for nearby towns. As demand grew, a new facility, known as Ferrybridge 'B', was opened in 1959 and offered a capacity of 282 megawatts. Ferrybridge 'C' (opened in 1968) today provides a massive output of 2,000 MW. Offices and workshops now occupy the original 1920s generator hall. Eight massive cooling towers dominate the site today, and look out over the old graveyard of St Andrew's Church.
