More about this scene

Glencoe village stands on the shores of Loch Leven. Here we see a row of classic stone-built thatched cottages, in the characteristic vernacular style. The reason for the infamous Glencoe massacre was the failure of MacIan to swear allegiance to William III before 1 January 1692. MacIan had arrived at Fort William on 31 December, but was redirected to Inverary, with the result that he did not take the oath until 6 January.
