More about this scene
College Street was originally only 10ft 9in wide. In the 1890s, the Gloucester Cathedral Approaches Company widened the street for easier access. Gloucester man John Stafford Smith composed 'The Star Spangled Banner', which is why the flag of the USA flies from the cathedral every day. It can be seen from the end of College Street as we enter the cathedral grounds.
