More about this scene

Here we see some fine brick houses, some with decorative bargeboards and Flemish-style gables. The landlord of the Swan Inn - the pub sign is in the centre of the photograph - was a Mr Beaney in 1908. The two men deep in conversation are clearly posed. Even the road sweeper has momentarily stopped work. Beyond the houses, across the fields, the roofs of Ashford can be seen.

A Selection of Memories from Great Chart

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Great Chart

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I lived at Swinford with my family from 1953 to approx 1966 or '67. My father put in the pool after we had a very extensive fire on Guy Fawkes night. I loved the house, the gardens and the resident ghost who I believed to be Veronica, wife of Alfred Austin. When I was 18 we moved to Hampshire. My brother went to prep school at Friars in Great Chart. Very fond memories of Great Chart!
If I own the title 'Lord of the Manor of Swinford', how can I relate myself to the Swinford Manor? I would be pleased to get a reply or acknowledgement from you. Regards Nelson Brunton
