More about this scene

Whitewashed houses and pantiled roofs characterise this photograph of the deserted Main Street of Green Hammerton, a small village in the Vale of York and on Roman Dere Street, just off the main A59 Harrogate to York road. It was the home of Thomas 'Alleluia Tommy' Segmore, a famous Methodist preacher.

A Selection of Memories from Green Hammerton

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Green Hammerton

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I remember sitting on this wall taking car numbers and having an ice cream from the booth situated in the area to the side of the pub. Also the fish and chip shop. The ice-cream booth blew away in a storm and was never seen again. There were steps up to the side area where the gap in the wall is. There were also steps up to the area round the corner in the right where New Lane begins. I was born in Green Hammerton and I still live here.
Don't know much about my g g Grandfather, Richard Whitaker, other than he lived in Green Hammerton with his second wife Emily Armstrong. He was the village copper, with three children from a previous marriage and I think another four with a new wife; one Harry (my great grandfather) and three sisters, May, Nelly and Emma. If anyone knows of where I may get some information about them, the village, or where I will find Police Constables information, please pass it on...kind regards Julie
The Tucker family were evacuated to Green Hammerton from 1940 - 1942. My brother John lived with Mr & Mrs Blackburn and my sister lived with Mrs Wray at the post office. They are both alive and still keep in contact with one of the village residents whom I shall be visiting this September.
My mother and family were evacuated to Green Hammerton and lived in the Post Office!
