More about this scene
This photograph of the west front was taken shortly after completion of the Temple Moore restoration, as we can see from the light-coloured stonework around the window, buttresses and parapets to the left of the tower. The clock had been installed in 1902 as the town's memorial to Queen Victoria, and has always remained something of a peculiarity. As the town or civic clock set in the church building, it is not surprising that there has been much confusion over the years as to who is responsible for its upkeep: is it the Council or the church? The rector of the period, the Rev Cobham, appears to be in conversation with a lady parishioner at the church gate.
