Guisborough, St Nicholas Church And War Memorial 1932

More about this scene
Comparison with the view of 1913 shows that by 1932 the original diamond-shaped surround to the clock face has been removed, but to this day the marks left by it can be clearly seen on the stonework. Also gone is the gas lamp over the wrought iron gates. Most noticeable by its appearance since 1913 is the town's war memorial or cenotaph, which was erected in 1925 in memory of those who fell in the First World War. The erection of the memorial was largely due to the untiring efforts of the rector of the period, the Rev Mackie, whose memory is perpetuated today in the town's Mackie Drive. The silver birches (left) have grown considerably over the 19 years between the two photographs.
