More about this scene

Gwithian Towans, the three-mile stretch of sandhills in which the village stands, was from 1889-1920 the home of the National Explosives works, which produced much of the cordite used in artillery shells during World War One. It employed 1,800 people who worked in small enclosures sunk into the dunes and isolated from each other to prevent a disastrous chain reaction in the event of an explosion or fire.
