Just inland from Scarborough, along the Forge Valley, lies the peaceful village of Hackness. The imposing 18th-century Hackness Hall was built here on the site of an old priory to the designs of John Carr's assistant Thomas Atkinson. The gardens and lake were laid out later. The house survived, and has recently been converted to a luxury
