More about this scene
The medieval manor house, Gawthorp Hall, was bought by the Harewood family, and John Carr was asked to design the new stable block. Shortly afterwards in 1756 he was asked to provide plans for a new house. The foundations of Harewood House were laid in 1759, and work continued for the next 23 years. Gawthorp Hall was demolished, and its foundations now lie beneath the lake. Lancelot 'Capability' Brown landscaped the grounds of this 1800-acre estate, which opened to the public in 1950 and now attracts over 300,000 visitors each year. Hidden within the estate is the exterior of the 'Emmerdale' village where much of the TV series is filmed.
