1970 1980s Harrogate

A Memory of Harrogate.

I spent some of the happiest years of my life in Harrogate, working in "The Grange" hotel (an old peoples home basically, along West Stray), I also worked in "Blind Jacks" behind the Prospect Hotel (we sold Old Peculiar ale and wow it was potent stuff - I was warned not to sell too much to people and keep an eye on them as it was so strong and tended to take people by surprise lol), and in both the Stalls and Buttery Bars at the Harrogate Theatre -in the late 1970s early 1980s. Me and a group of mates used to go to Picassos Nightclub, the Carrington Nightclub, Kings Club and the Bali Hai. I also did office work at an Opticians (Dolland & something). I have been struggling to remember the name of a pub we used to go to on Sunday lunchtimes that was halfway down Parliament Street on the hill, on the Baths side of the road, but my online research shows its no longer there - Does anyone remember these places? I'm from New Zealand and have looked online but everything has now changed (as it would I guess). I'd look forward to hearing from anyone who remembers that time in Harrogate. I have extremely fond memories. Sara - The Kiwi.

Sara I left Yorkshire for Melbourne in 86 so memory a bit hazy. The pub may have been The Gluepot?? It was roughly where you mentioned. I'll keep thinking though. Cheers Duncan
Yes Duncan thank you!! It was the Gluepot! Ah, thats right. Funny I didn't remember that as there was a tv programme in NZ at that time featuring some characters in a pub called the Gluepot. Yes I was on google and my it has all changed. I'm glad I was there at that time, my friend who still lives there tells me its totally different now, hardly any clubs at all - they've all closed down. Pinocchios the restaurant that was above Picassos is still open, but all the clubs have shut. I'm glad I was there at that time, I had an absolute blast.
Hi everyone and my wife and I actually met in the Gluepot Harrogate 1969 and it is our Golden wedding anniversary this year 50 years married. I would really appreciate it if anyone has a photograph of the Gluepot please which I can use on a card to give to the wife, Appreciated if anyone can. Best regards James jimstephen65@outlook.com
Hi Sara, the opticians was called Dolland and Aitchison. My mum worked there and I had a Saturday job there in the 80's. Fun memories of all the clubs back in the 80's - all the ones you mentioned (I didn't know Bali Hai but I know my older sister used to go there) plus others that might not have been in Harrogate when you were - Josephines, 11 club, Jimmy's. All gone now. Also Pinocchios is long gone (my fave restaurant as a child in the 70's when it was just a small Italian with a Pinocchio puppet hanging over the ice cream freezer and a guy called Tony was my fave waiter! Not sure if he was the owner?). It is now an Indian restaurant. I was born and brought up here, moved away for approx 20 years in my early 20's and returned a few years ago to find some changes but happy to say it's still a really lovely place to live.
I remember all of the above and am trying to put a collection of photos together from the year my husband and I met in 1980 in vanis Harrogate for our wedding anniversary. Does anyone know the best place to search for photos of these places from that time period? We went to the odeon and ABC cinemas.
Carringtons, Jimmy's, 11club Annabella's nightclubs.
The dalesgate pub, the Radcliffe arms at follifoot and a pub on cold bath road the name of which I've forgotten.
I also remember supermarkets being right in the centre of town like Lipton's which I think was on James Street but could have been Cambridge Street. Also Morrisons was where everyman is now..
I remember Dayvilles ice-cream parlor on station parade and their skinny chips in a box. It was the first time we'd had American food! I'd love to hear more from other people from around this time period.
Any photos from around
Just found this after searching for The Bali Hai. Great memories reading these comments. The Gluepot was one of our drinking haunts back then. I can recall getting drunk on Barley Wine one Saturday lunch time and then going up Lowthers Arcade to buy my fruit and veg. The onion bag broke and they all went rolling down the arcade, hilarious to us at the time. Hales Bar was a good drinking hole as well. I was only 16! Happy days though. Last time I went to Harrogate, The Gluepot was a Wetherspoons. I can remember the Damn Yankee was a good place to go as well.
The Damn Yankee! I remember that! I had a mate who knew the owners (Julie and her husband, think it was Steve?) who ran it - I rented a room off them for a few months, above the restaurant. Interesting times........ Good food and good people.
