More about this scene
The discovery of spa water in 1571 led to a remarkable period in the town's history. Here in Low Harrogate hotels and stylish crescents were built, attracting a very good class of visitor. The Pump Room was constructed in 1842 over the sulphur wells. The roads leading to the Pump Room were often chained off to allow drinkers the opportunity of enjoying a leisurely constitutional in and around the Crescent and Valley Gardens.
