Harrogate's Station Square 1960/70's

A Memory of Harrogate.

I see Macfisheries and Lindy's Cafe.There was also a cafe called Chequeres that as a child I was advised by my parents not to use.Standings was on the corner of Station Square and James Street providing that old English style of service and olde shoppe tradition,how they are missed...every purchase put into a brown paper bag .There used to be a little old guy stood outside the old Market Hall selling newspapers, I think he was called Billy Butters.In the Market Hall was Mr Leslie selling fresh fruit and veg,and downstairs the Robell Musjc Box where I would spend my pocket money on a 45 rpm single most weeks.They had about 3 listening booths where you could here your potential purchase before deciding wether it was a hit or a miss if you were lucky you got the booth at the end which was a listening room on its own,maybe in stereo where as the other booths may have been mono .Whenever you bought a single or an LP it was handed over to you in a pink and white candy striped paper bag with the Robell Musjc Box stamp on the bag in blue ink.I bought many singles there,LP's would include those Hot Hit type and I remember Pink Floyds 'Relics' ...which I swapped at a later date with my mate for T Rex's Electric Warrior album.The owner was a really nice chap who would swap your purchase if you changed your mind and returned a week later..Just around the corner from the Market Hall was a Jewish Taylor where I would take my trousers to be altered,he
always did a great job... but he smoked a cigar as he worked so everything needed a wash before it could be worn again.
