More about this scene

The poet John Clare was born in Helpston in 1793, the son of a thresher. He was to become tragically involved with the movement against the enclosure of the open fields and the destruction, as he saw it, of the countryside and life he so loved. He published his 'Poems Descriptive of Rural Life' in 1820.

A Selection of Memories from Helpston

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Helpston

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I lived in the property behind the cross until the end of '59, there was no window top right at this time. Photograph (ref: H434002) most likely early 1960s.
