More about this scene
Any more for the 'Skylark'? Holidaymakers queue up for the traditional offshore boat trip, while in the background the 19th-century pier steps out to sea on its spindly legs. At almost three-quarters of a mile in length, it was the second-longest pier in England after Southend's, but was damaged by a severe storm in 1978 and pulled down the following year. The Grand Pier Pavilion, opened by the Lord Mayor of London in 1910, had already been gutted by fire in 1970.
