More about this scene
Standing on rising ground on the west bank of the River Gwendraeth, Kidwelly and its fortified town were founded by Roger, Bishop of Salisbury during the reign of Henry I. The present castle dates from c1275 when it was begun by Payn de Charworth and completed by Henry of Lancaster. The picture shows the southern gatehouse, and it was here on the first and second floors that the constable had his apartments. The machicolation above the gateway dates from the remodelling carried out by Henry IV.
