Leeds was the industrial power house of the old West Riding. There was an enormous variety to the manufacturing base of the city, including railway locomotives from the Hunslet Engine Co., Manning Wardle & Co., Kitsons, and Hudswell Clarke. The postal service in Victorian times was considered a vital part of the public good with offices in major cities having long opening hours.
