More about this scene
The shingled spire of the 14th-century church of St Peter and St Paul rises above this picturesque collection of old houses and shops at the southern end of the churchyard. On the right are the early 18th-century plain brick frontages of the Star Inn cottages, while on the extreme left is a 15th-century hall-house, Pollard Cottage, with a 16th-century projecting gable over its shop front. The sides of meat in the window serve to underline the fact that it continued to operate as a butcher's shop into the 1950s. Closer to the churchyard entrance are the 16th-century timber-framed Old Town Stores, owned and operated at this period by E R Beer.
