The Lizard, View From Green c.1955

More about this scene

We are less than a mile inland from the true Lizard - the most southerly point in England - and at the end of the A3083, which rolls out across the peninsula from Helston. The area near the village green is still the centre for visitors. There are cafes, souvenir shops and workshops for the famous serpentine stone which became popular in Victorian times. These are early days, but there is a hint of this trade - without it the village could not survive.

The shop on the right was run by my great-uncle Charles Johns, and the sweetshop next door by the Steps brothers, with Triggs shop on the left.
