More about this scene
Though there was a castle here that withstood a siege in 1335, the five-storey tower-house dates from the late 14th to early 15th century. The entrance to the tower is on the second floor and reached only by a ladder. Loch Leven has a small irregular courtyard, known as a barmkin, which is enclosed by a curtain wall. Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned here by the lords of the Congregation in 1567 and compelled to abdicate in favour of her son James VI. The following year she escaped and joined her army, which was commanded by the fifth Earl of Argyll.
