Button Bros.

A Memory of Luton.

I remember the Button bros.shop in Luton,I think it was just menswear but it was expensive posh clothing and they were tailors also I think. My dad got a suit in there and we went to the counter to pay.The shop assistant wrote a receipt on carbon paper,my dad paid him the money he gave my dad one copy of the receipt and the other copy he put it in some kind of small recepticle with the money and snapped the lid shut,he then turned around and put the capsule in what looked like a dumb waiter and closed the small door, there was a loud whoosh, about a minute later there was another whoosh and the capsule had come back with his change.Apparently it was a machine called a ram.It sucks the capsule in a pipe to the cashiers office upstairs.Someone told me recently that the co op department store had them too.

The co-op had them only in the bridge street part of the store but not the New Bedford road part
