My Memories Of A Byegone Luton
A Memory of Luton.
I was born in Luton in 1938 and spent most of my formative years until 1965 living with my parents in their small two bedroom bungalow in Mixes Hill Road, Stopsley. I began my education at the Stopsley enfant school before progressing to the junior school finally ending up at the Technical School in Park Square (I think the official title was County Secondary Technical School aka The Tech.). From there I joined Vauxhall Motors in 1954 for a five year engineering apprenticeship before ending my twenty four years with the company as Dealer Service Development Manager for the West Midlands and North Wales.
I have fond memories of the old indoor market with its overwhelming smell of fish. The Corn Exchange with its cafe in the ground floor run I believe by the White Rose catering company. Great jazz being played in the TUC Club in Church Street. The Grand Theatre with its rather risque shows of semi naked girls who had to stand totally still or risk the toils of the law! The George Hotel and Saturday night dances while us lads consumed pints of Flowers bitter to feed our Dutch courage before we dare ask a girl for a dance.
I had no idea at the time that I would end up living on a farm in Worcestershire with a few acres for my wife's ponies and outbuildings for my old cars. Happy days!
