Maidenhead, Berkshire.
A Memory of Maidenhead.
I am wondering if anyone remembers my grandfather Dr. Kenneth (Ken) Simon. He had a practice in Maidenhead in a house called Marlborough along the river next to the sounding bridge but the entrance to his surgery was at the back entrance. His patients included the actress Betty Davis who used to stay at Skindles Hotel, also, my grandmother Phyllis (Phyl) and my mother Gian (Gillian) Simon ran the pub inside Skindles for a short time during the 1960's.
My grandfather went by boat during the great floods to deliver babies and make house calls, he was an avid fisherman and lived in Maidenhead on and off since he was a little boy through the 1970's.
My mother, Gian (Gillian), aunt Angela (Anna, either Kirk or Simon) and uncle David all grew up there.
My memories are of sleeping in the very top room in the house and looking out on the river all beautiful and lit up with both hotels (Skindles and the one on the other side of the bridge that is still there - Maidenhead Thames-side?) Watching all the boats and lovely nightlife going on. And of fishing from the jetty across from the house down on the river and of course my brother falling in! Also, evening walks with my grandfather so we could make noise under the sounding bridge and hear our echoes, very happy memories.
