More about this scene
The church was given by William the Conqueror to the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen, who administered it until 1415; it was then in the care of the nuns of Syon Abbey until the Dissolution. The curious 14th-century octagonal spire was reduced by fifty feet to its present height in 1543, when it was in danger of collapsing, and was then capped with its coronet.
