New Tredegar Good Days

A Memory of Newcastle.

I went to New Tredegar Technical school from 1962-67. It was a good time. I lived in Phillipstown and it was a 10 minute walk to school - fantastic. I remember the winter of 1963 and my satchel was ruined by the sleighing down the hill to school (the excuse I made to my parents was worthy of an Oscar). The Tech had good teachers (Mining Institute effect) and it was a very close community. It was overseen by the head (Mr Stanley Jones), he was strict but fair. I had the cane from Mr S Jones on two occasions; the first was out of bounds near the Rhymney river, the second for a group offence of at least 15, year 4 boys throwing snowballs at the girls in the bus shelter.
The Tech was good for me and the teachers helped me get the exam grades I needed. I went to Cardiff University and became a teacher in London. I owe New Tredegar Technical school a great thank you, and in particular Mr Stanley Jones who helped me and gave me encouragement to aim high. Thank you, Sir.

PS. A prank was done on the staff and SJ. Their rooms were next to each other; opposite was a banister leading up the stairs (an anchor point), some sharp person using the knowledge from physics lessons regarding leavers, tied a rope around each door knob and around the banister. Then banged hard on each door. We watched the comedy unravel - it was like a Norman Wisdom film- as each pulled and pushed. Remember it was after all a Technical School (applied science)

I happened to be browsing the Internet and came across your web page. It was very interesting to read your memories of New Tredegar technical school. I also attended from 1962 to 67 and also received the cane for the snowball incident. I can also remember the tying of the doors. It's funny to read about and it has jogged my memory of all the other things that took place that day. I am still good friends with the head boy of that time Tony Edwards and Alan Pugh. I left school and served an electrical apprenticeship and became an electrical engineer for nearly 40 years.
Regards Mike Lewis.
I remember both Tony Edwards and Alan Pugh (I remember Alan was involved in an incident in the first year when a older boy tried to bully him - he never tried that again with Alan). In the 5th year I was a Lab assistant with Geri Thomas. What laughs we had. One day there was a smell of gas coming from under the Chemistry room desks. The teacher (Mr Truscott - I think) looked under the desk and lit his cigarette lighter, there was a flash and he re-appeared with his eyebrows and hair smoking. How we laughed.
Hello Mike
I saw Geri Thomas in the George (Gelligaer) about three years ago. I used to come down to Wales to see my mother. Unfortunately she has died, so it is highly unlikely I will see him again. Give my best wishes to anyone you see who might have known me from New Tredegar Tech days. I see that you have retired, make sure you make the most of it. I have retired from teaching (thank goodness) and enjoy travelling with my wife, home and abroad; enjoying life while we can. All the best for the future. Howard Watkins
I am sure I know you , I attended the same school a little later and may have seen you out and about but am not 100%. I spent a lot of my time in Kensington London where their life was far more advanced than valley life which I took advantage of and came home prepared for anything. I am retired now after spending most of my life as a construction adviser for Tarmac. My last project was maes manor hotel / golf course Newport which took a lot of organising and took it's toll on my family life which in the end made my mind up to retire. I am sure our paths have crossed but can not remember where. Regards Howard Cavender ( cavy1@hotmail.co.uk )
