More about this scene

This village is at the very heart of so called 'witch country'. Its 16th-century church has the Eye of God on its church tower to protect the villagers against witchcraft, which was so genuinely feared by the parishioners of St Mary's. A rush bearing procession is still observed annually; this dates from the days when the rush-cart brought fresh rushes to strew on the earth floors. We can see that the village lies on a slope; Pendle Hill rises behind.
