More about this scene

Ockley is a very fine village along the course of the Roman road from London to Chichester, which has been known from Anglo-Saxon times as Stane Street. The village is in places built hard up to the road (now the A29) as in this view, or along the edge of long greens, while the parish church is half a mile east of the village. The Old Hatch, the cross-winged house on the left, has heavy Horsham sandstone roof slates. The petrol station on the right has been replaced by a 1970s pair of houses.

A Selection of Memories from Ockley

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Ockley

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

My mother died in 1943,when I was still a child. It was strange, terrible time but I remember vividly standing in the peaceful churchyard at the burial. The place is dear to my heart.
