More about this scene
The view is closed at the far end of the street by Norman Burton's, built in the early 1800s, and just to the right the café sign invites you to Frances Hill's tea rooms. The right of the picture shows Rowswell's sweets and tobacco shop and it is still there. The archway leads to Dog Alley, the scene of one of Flora Twort's lovely paintings, which used to go through to St Peter's Road. Beyond, E J Baker sold uncommonly good meat and the 'Punch and Judy', uncommonly good teas. On the left, Suter's was a quality shoe shop, later to become Kenney's; George Kenney was to enhance the shop's reputation still further.
