More about this scene

The old limekiln stands on the beach between the curving pier and the fish palace. Limestone was shipped in from Plymouth and burnt with Welsh culm (anthracite) to make lime, which was taken by local farmers to neutralise their acid soils. Many Cornish harbours and creeks had similar kilns.
