Atlantic House Hotel

A Memory of Polzeath.

We used to stay at the Atlantic in the 1960’s and I am now doing research into the history of Polzeath. The Terrace was built I believe in the 1898 and it was part of the Pentireglaze Estate which I think was owned by the Lanhydrock estate but sold off in the 20’s bit by bit. The hotel (opened 1903) on a map of 1924 is shown to have been rented (?) by Mrs Macmillan and Mr T Williams. There is a possibility that Carl Jung stayed there and gave his 1923 Polzeath Seminar there in July 1923 but it is not certain. There is a reference in the Jung notes to a “village hall” where the 10 day seminar for 29 people took place. I understand that there was not only a tennis court behind the hotel, now the car park, but also a ballroom. It would be interesting to hear memories of them although I suspect the ballroom was built for entertainment in WW2 and had a limited life. In the hotel in the 60’s and 70’s there was a hall at the back which is where they had discos and we used to call the games room. It was dark and up some stairs from what was once the library where they served afternoon tea but became the short lived Doom Bar. Robert I remember used to run the residents bar in the 60’s and the residents dining hall was beyond that. Any comments on the houses on the terrace would be interesting too.
