Porthmadog, The Harbour Showing Cnicht And The Moelwyns c.1960

More about this scene
At the height of the great slate trade of the 19th century, slate was shipped out from Porthmadog harbour, and the town grew steadily because of this. This post-war photograph shows a very different scene compared to the way it looks today. The right of the harbour now accommodates some rather incongruous housing, while the warehousing on the left has also given way to housing. What can be seen in the photograph is how little the narrow-gauge Ffestiniog Railway had been developed: no tracks are visible, and all appears to be wasteland. Now it is a popular railway for tourists.
