Rock Pools And Surf

A Memory of Porthtowan.

Our first visit to Porthtowan for a holiday was in August 2001 when we took my husband, Chris' five year old son Daniel for a stay at The Beach Hotel. The owners, Sian and Colin and their four children made us very welcome and we were to become friends. Every summer we would trek down to Porthtowan from Essex, time was spent playing in rock pools, drinking at The Blue Bar near the beach and walking the beautiful golden sands to Chapel Porthtowan beach when the tide allowed. Once when walking the cliff path we spied a pod of dolphins playing. We would always wear wet suits, the sea was cold even in August, and body board the waves which was great fun. We also became good friends with other regular families staying at the hotel and often played rounders on the beach together including Sian and Colin et al. Then afterwards a barbecue.
The Beach Hotel doesn't exist anymore, instead sit luxury apartments, Sian and Colin and family emigrated to Canada. We still visit The Blue Bar when in Cornwall but we have very happy memories of our holidays.
