Christmas Deliveries: If you placed an order on or before midday on Friday 19th December for Christmas delivery it was despatched before the Royal Mail or Parcel Force deadline and therefore should be received in time for Christmas. We are looking northwards from below Priory Corner, across urban Portland from Killicks Hill and the school at Clovens Road above Chesil Cove (bottom left), to Chiswell, Fortuneswell (centre) and Castletown. Beyond is the four square mile expanse of the Royal Navy's Victorian Harbour of Refuge, and its 20th-century oil tanks (centre left) beside the Mere. The backdrop extends from Wyke Regis (top left) and Sandsfoot towards Bincleaves (right).

Correction
This picture does not show Castletown, or the convict prison. It does show Chiswell in the foreground, and Fortuneswell on the hillside. The Great Verne Citadel (not a prison then) is hidden on the hilltop, left. Thank you for the correction - we have now updated our database!

Regarding The Name Of Church Ope
Regarding the name of Church Ope in this photograph: it's a common misapprehension that when Portlanders say "Ope" they're dropping their aitches - not so. Ope is a proper word mening 'opening to the sea' and occurs in Church Ope, Big Ope etc.

Old Times At Portland
When old farmer used to have fields down bottom of Pound Piece he used to make hut out of hay bundles of hay. Now they have built houses on it, and when the farmer used to have cows in the field next to Park estate road now house are built there too. Portland So Many Memories !
I was born in 1950 and my first home was the flat beside the Regal cinema in Fortuneswell, Portland where my dad, Bob Mutch, was the projectionist. In 1953 we moved to Coronation Road on the Verne Common estate. I attended Brackenbury infant school, the Cliff School (juniors) and finally Portland County Secondary School leaving in 1967. Genealogy & Research Images

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
