Occupying a hill-top, Preesall grew as a small market around a corn mill and two pubs, both of which are shown here, the Black Bull and the Saracen's Head. The village developed further after salt was discovered in 1872, and several wells were sunk to pump brine. However, the industry declined in the 1920s, after significant subsidence began to occur.

Alan Clarkson the subpostmaster at Preesall was my great uncle. After retiring from the Post Office he and his wife Rizpah moved to a house called Grasmere in Pilling Lane Preesall. It was the first house on the right as you turn into the lane painted black and white. As a child l spent many hours exploring the area and a favourite was walking down Pilling Lane cutting across a field to the shoreline and walking by the sea wall to Knott End returning back to my relations via the road.
I was born in the large house behind the van in June of 1932. At that time it was a private maternity home run by a Midwife called Nurse Bailey. My maternal grandparents lived in Plumtree Cottage, which is on the left of the photo opposite the big house. The house in the middle distance was the Post Office, Alan Clarkson being the Postmaster in those days.

I grew up in Stalmine, went to St. Aidens school, used to catch the bus home from the round house. I remember the penny lollies, and walking home if I missed the bus. I knew Eric Butler and his family, he was our best man at our wedding, also I was friends with his sister Susan, happy memories..
I'm trying to trace my great uncle, Charles Ingleson, who lived with his wife Elsie at "Lyndhurst", Pilling Lane, Preesall in the 1930/40's. If anyone remembers them it would be great to hear from you.
