Norden Riviera

A Memory of Rochdale.

Yes it was a sort of luxury to have the outdoor pool at Norden, people would descend upon the Riviera every weekend. For me though it was short lived as we moved to Norden in 61 and it closed in 63. I think the Tannery owned the land and the lease ran out. The Tannery later used the changing rooms etc., for storage of hides.
I do remember it took ages to get into the water as it was freezing.
I remember the Watson family lived in the house to the left as one went down the lane to the Riviera.
They went to live on a farm far up Woodhouse Lane called Doldrums once the Riviera closed. All that area is housing now. Does anyone remember the big wooden cross in the woods behind the Riviera? My pal Joyce and I thought it had to be a horse as it was so tall.

Just come across your email about the Riviera which brings back some happy memories. I used to work there in the locker room as young lad none payed but free entrance giving out the keys for the lockers along with a rubber band with your key number on it after doing an hour or so I was then allowed to spend the rest of the day swimming and sunbathing rain permitting I left in 1957 when we moved out of Greenbooth village. That was some place to live but that. is another story.
