Rottingdean, the valley of Rota's people, is cut off from its vast neighbour, Brighton, by steep chalk downs and sea cliffs. Although within Brighton's boundaries since 1928, it retains much of its character, despite Saltdean's sprawl colliding from the east. With Kipling's 'blunt, bow-headed, whale-backed Downs' surrounding it, the village runs up a valley from the sea, climaxing beyond the High Street on the Green with its pond, where Kipling lived.
