More about this scene

The council paid £139,000 for the park in 1872, it being one of a number of acquisitions by the authority over the previous 20 years. In 1852, following an outbreak of cholera, the council bought out the private water suppliers for £250,000 and embarked on schemes totalling £4 million, so that by 1918 the city was being supplied with 16 million gallons of fresh water a day. In 1870 the council also acquired control of the Gas Company for £750,000.
