More about this scene
Like Winchelsea on the other side of the River Brede valley, Rye is a hill town at the end of a ridge between the Tillingham and Rother rivers. A great medieval port and a walled town, it declined as the sea retreated; by Victorian times it was mainly a prosperous market town for the surrounding area and the Walland Marshes. This view shows the town from the south and the fine parish church of St Mary. Seaside and Coastal Sussex: From Bosham to Rye
