Like Winchelsea on the other side of the River Brede valley, Rye is a hill town at the end of a ridge between the Tillingham and Rother rivers. A great medieval port and a walled town, it declined as the sea retreated; by Victorian times it was mainly a prosperous market town for the surrounding area and the Walland Marshes. I used to come to Rye regularly in the 1960s, as my father had been stationed in Winchelsea for part of the war. We often made the journey from Surrey on a Bank Holiday, which was always very busy. Little did I dream then that I would actually come to live and work in the town. I was based in Iden and Playden in the 1990s and after 18 years as a vicar in Bexhill, I returned to become the Rector of St Mary's Church. Fabulous place to visit, and it's great to live here too!

Brazies Of Rye
My ancestors are the Braziers from Rye and were coal merchants and wool staplers. We often visit the town especially around Landgate where they once lived. Many Braziers are buried in the All Saints and St Mary's Parish Church and I wonder if any Braziers still live in the town?

Rye Grammar School
I have a great-grandfather and several of his brothers who went to this grammar school in the 1830s and 1840s and they all had very nice writing with perfect copperplate. So maybe the severity on the outside was reflected in the teaching on the inside. My great-grandfather wrote with a quill pen on paper and I wonder whether anyone knows whether he used a quill at school. He knew a lot about New Zealand before he ...see more

Home Sweet Home
I lived in Rye till i was 11. I still class it as home even though Im 30 now and I miss the place like crazy. Maybe one day I will convince my other half to bring me home.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
